Is automation the miracle cure for all process problems?

Across the world Process Improvement and Automation are talked about in the same breath and many times, interchangeably. Its almost a foregone conclusion for many of us that just removing “manual touches” from the system by automating them, miraculously brings about significant productivity gains. A few weeks back, I read an article, that asked among other things, whether automation marks the end of process improvement. I felt it was a great article and forgot all about it till I came across a situation at work recently that made me go back and think about automation.
